History of the Chinese Community in Sheffield
華人社區在雪埠的歷史

Currently, the Chinese Community is the third largest BME group in England’s fourth largest city, Sheffield. Like other Chinese community across the nation, the community is scattered around various areas in Sheffield, however, according to official census and our records, S11 and S2 have the highest concentration of the Chinese population. The area covering Sharrow, Highfield and most part of London Road are now recognised as the unofficial Chinatown comparing to larger cities such as Manchester or Birmingham, etc.

There were Chinese laundries existing in Sheffield in the pre-war years, nevertheless, a significant influx of migrant workers came in the sixties from Hong Kong and their families became the Chinese community as we know today. Most of these workers are now retired and unfortunately, the majority of them still could not speak English and it is this language barrier becoming service barrier until today. In recent years, many Chinese came from mainland China as asylum seekers; they are, of course, need to use the NHS just like others and almost all of them needs help in accessing the service.

以現階段來說,雪埠華人社區是全英第四大城市的第三大少數民族. 就像全國各地的其他華人社區一樣,華人分散在雪埠每個角落. 但根據官方數據顯示,S11區和S2區有最密的華人人口.這地區囊括了莎露區(Sharrow),Highfield和倫敦路大部分地區. 和曼城或伯明罕的唐人街相比較, 這區域被視為非正式的唐人街,.

在二戰前就有華人所開的洗衣舖在雪埠出現.但眾所周知, 真正的大量移民發生在六十年代, 當時從香港過來的華裔家庭組成了主要的華人社區. 這些當時過來的勞工現在都已退休.而很遺憾的,到今天為止, 他們大多都因英文不流利而不能有效的使用保健服務. 近年來則有許多從中國大陸過來的政治難民.就像其他人一樣, 他們都需要國民保健服務, 而大多數都需要協助以使用這些服務.

Kinhon means ‘health’ in Chinese. The programme is commissioned by the Sheffield Primary Care Trusts. We provide free information and confidential advocacy to Chinese families in Sheffield for better access to NHS related services Kinhon.

  • Registration and booking of appointment for GP, Dentist, Optician, etc.
  • 註冊, 預約家庭醫生, 牙醫, 驗眼師等
  • Confirmation, alteration and cancellation of hospital outpatient appointment, etc
  • 確認, 修改或取消醫院門診病人的預約
  • Arrange interpreter for all primary and secondary care services
  • 安排傳譯員協助使用所有基層及次層護理服務
  • To answer all enquiries on NHS prescription, and to advice on patients’ rights and benefits
  • 解答所有國民保健服務藥費條例及病人福利諮詢
  • Assist users to express their feedback as well as helping to lodge complaint to related service providers
  • 協助用戶表達他們對相關服務的反應和投訴
  • Provide latest information to users on vital services like accident and emergency, NHS direct and NHS walk-in Centre, etc.
  • 提供主要服務的最新資訊, 如意外及急診的處理和國民保健熱線服務
  • Provide variety of supports to mental health service users or carers, e.g. advice on benefits and statutory rights, advocacy, patient rights enquiry, arrangement for accommodation, leisure activities, confidence-building group as well as Chinese speaking mental health professional to provide counselling and clinical assessment
  • 提供多種支援給精神及心理健康的服務使用者或護理者 (如: 建議, 代言, 心理輔導等). 其他服務包括病人權利資詢, 特別緊急住所安排, 贊助康樂活動, 建立自信小組, 及安排精通華語的專業人士作臨床評估等.
